Elected 4 March 1901 as a U.S. Representative from Indiana (2 terms). Born in Aurora, Dearborn County, Indiana, March 5, 1842. Spent the early part of his life on farms in Indiana, Missouri, and Iowa. Attended the common schools and taught in the public schools in Iowa. During the Civil war enlisted in the 5th Kansas Regiment and served until August 12, 1864. He was mustered out with the rank of first sargeant. Attended Hartsville College, Bartholomew County Indiana. Taught in Jennings, County, Indiana. Studied law at Mount Vernon, Indiana. Was admitted to the bar in 1873 and commenced practice in Carbon, Clay County, Indiana. Moved to Brazil, Indiana in 1874. Mayor of Brazil, Indiana 1877-1880, 1887 and 1888. City attorney in 1884. Presidential elector on the republican ticket of Blaine and Logan in 1884. Member of the city council 1892-1896. Elected as a Republican to the 57th Congress and 3 succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1901-Mar 3, 1909). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1908. Reengaged in the practice of law in Brazil, Indiana until 1922 when he retired from active pursuits.

Admitted to Christ Church College, Oxford University as a Gentleman commoner 18 JJul 1600; received a BA 1601. He was knighted at Whitehall 29-Apr-1607. He was a member of the Virginia Company, for which he received land in Virginia 1622. He was also a Commissioner of the East India Company, and the Muscovy Company.

Courtland Holliday reportedly left Genesee Falls, NY with his wife, Jerusha, and daughter, also named Jerusha, for Aurora, Dearborn Cty, Indiana around 1820 or earlier. It seems they floated on a wood raft down the Ohio and settled in Dearborn County, Indiana.

He came to this country with the Winthrop-Saltonstall party, going first to Watertown, MA. He moved on to Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT, which was settled in 1634. He then joined the New Haven colony, and from there crossed Long Island Sound to Hempstead, L.I. in 1644.
