Ancestry of James L. Moses

The following genealogy is relevant to this site as it connects directly to the James Lovehue Baker line of Smith Township. James Lovehue Baker was a son of Elihu Baker, son of Lovell Baker.

Thomasson Weckler of London, England, a descendent of Margarette Baker, stated that the Bakers in Hampshire spelled their name in a variety of ways, even within the same document, making searches difficult....Baker, Beker, Becer, Backer, Bakre, Becher, to list a few. The first four generations were supplied by Mr. Weckler.
("The Bakers of Hampshire" by Thomasson Weckler, Morley Bookworks, London, 1922)

[1] Richard Baker
b. 1601-02 Hampshire (?), England
d. Basingstoke (Basingastoc), Hampshire, England 1654 in 53rd year of his life
Richard's will gave all (two parcels of land, house and contents, tools, two mares, one cow, and twelve sheep) to his only son, Edward. Reference made to "daughters now living" as having received money earlier. Wife not mentioned, so apparently she was already deceased.

[2] Edward Baker
b. c. 1629 Basingstoke, Hampshire, England
d. bet. 1692 - 1702 Hampshire (?), England.
Edward sold a plot of land in 1692 near Basingstoke. Never found mentioned again in records. No will found. Tax records of 1702 show that his son, William, was the owner of the remaining estate.

[3] William Baker (mentioned in CE records, Basingstoke. Assumed to be the eldest son of Edward due to the inheritance of property. Possibly had a brother, Edward, and a sister, Margaret)
b. 1657 Basingstoke, Hampshire, England
d. Hampshire, England (?)
children:
i. Richard b. Basingstoke, Hampshire, England d. Basingstoke, Hampshire, England
(children: Edward, Robert, William, and Richard, plus several daughters)
ii. Edward b. 1687 Basingstoke, Hampshire, England
iii. Margarette b. 1688 Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. She went to America with her brother, Edward, but returned to England by 1719. There is no record of her marriage until 1729 (at age 41!!!). She was recorded in the (Basingstoke) CE as Margarit Baker, her maiden name. She married a physician above the age of 60. They had one daughter, Hannah. Margarette died 1778 in London.

The following is based on Weckler's data, information from James Moses, and from the Swarthmore College Quaker records in Swarthmore, PA. There are far too many consistencies to discount the connection.

[4] Edward
(m. Dorothy)
b. 1687 Basingstoke, Hampshire, England
d. PA? VA?
Children:
i. William (eldest son) b. Basingstoke, Hampshire, England.
ii. Edward (d. very young, Basingstoke, Hampshire, England)

vii. daughter (twin) b.c. 1720 Chester or Lancaster Co. PA
viii. Edward b.1722 Lancaster Co. PA
Edward and family went to America in 1715, settling first in Chester Co, PA. then to Lancaster Co., PA (Swarthmore records state he is the son of "William of Hampshire", leaving the impression that William was living at that time, and a Quaker). Unsure if Dorothy is the mother of the children or, perhaps, a later wife. A year after their arrival, Edward's nephews (by deceased brother, Richard) went to Philidelphia. Edward and family moved to the Pridesville area of Amelia Co. VA in 1736 (Swarthmore).

[5] Edward, 2nd son of Edward to be given the name.
b. abt. 1722 Lancaster Co. PA
d. bet. 1786-1788 Russell Co., VA (this area became Lee Co.in 1793)
m. 1742 Elizabeth Lovell b. 1726 VA. Sister of William Lovell of Henry County, VA. Her father William, b. 1699 Modbury, Devonshire, England. To VA abt 1720 with a group of Quakers, settling in Isle Of Wight Co. d. there 1737. Wife not known.

After Edward and Elizabeth married, they settled on the Upper Blackwater in present day Franklin Co., VA. Elizabeth's brother, William, provided them with two slaves as a wedding gift, apparently creating quite a rift between them and their religion. In addition to farming and working in leather, he operated a ferry across the Blackwater for a number of years. In the spring of 1771, two of his sons died while attempting to ferry the raft across the flooded river.

In 1786 or 1787, Edward and Elizabeth, several grown children and their familes, and an assortment of cousins and nephews, moved to western Russell Co., VA, where they attempted to establish a station on the Powell River. An increase in Indian depredations caused them to flee in the spring of 1788. Edward died there (unknown if the cause was Indians or old age) and Elizabeth, as well as at least some of the others, returned to Frankin County where she resided with children until her death later in 1788.

NOTE: The remainder of this page rests totally on data from James L. Moses, a descendent of the Richard Baker born in Pittsylvania Co., VA, in 1773.

Note from James Moses: "The next one in my line was the Richard Baker that was born in Pittslvania Co. in 1773. The correct date for his marriage to Susannah Pritchett is 12 Dec 1794. They were married in Franklin County, VA. They spent many years living in both of the Carolinas, and finally moved to Creek Indian country in North-west Georgia about 1825. He died after 1832 as he had registered for the 1832 Georgia Land Lottery and was allotted land in present day Gordon and Bartow (Cass) County. Susannah died in Cass County, GA in 1839. They had 11 boys and 1 girl that I know of.

Their son, [8]Andrew, married Martha Jane Sizemore in Cass County, GA in 1832. He was born in 1807 in South Carolina. In the Spring of 1840, Andrew and Martha, along with several other family members, moved to Missouri and settled on land in present day Nodaway county, near the Iowa border. That fall, Andrew went north into Iowa to do some trading with the Indians and never returned. It was not known if he died, was killed, or simply decided not to return. He left behind his wife and 5 children, including my great-great grandmother, [9] Sara Jane Baker."
